MRSA-- More deadly than AIDS?
Every 30 seconds someone contracts MRSA.
A new estimate from the Centers for Disease Control says that drug-resistant Staphylococcus bacteria are killing more people than the AIDS Virus. And the CDC says that cases of non-healthcare-related MRSA infections are on the rise.
While MRSA skin infections can occur anywhere, some environmental factors are more conducive to MRSA transmission. These factors, which the CDC calls "the 5 C's", are: Crowding, frequent skin-to-skin Contact, Compromised skin (i.e., cuts or abrasions), Contaminated items and surfaces, and lack of Cleanliness.
Places where the 5 C's are common include schools (elementary and secondary, as well as colleges and universities), dormitories, day care centers, military barracks, households and correctional facilities-- in fact, any place where people have close contact. You cannot avoid MRSA by avoiding the 5 C's. This staph bacteria is found anywhere. One in three people carry staph on their skin. They can spread the infection anywhere in the community.
